3A: Communicating with Students ~ Convey to students that there is a purpose to what they are learning ~ Invest in students emotionally, show you care about them as people ~Use both verbal, nonverbal, and online communication ~Give clear directions ~ Present accurate, clear, and imaginative ideas to help keep students engaged ~ Use vivid and rich vocabulary ~ Tell students what your expectations are ~ Anticipate misconceptions and address them clearly ~ Use both oral and written language
3B: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques ~ gauge what your students understand ~ Deepen understanding beyond just reciting facts verbatim ~Promote critical thinking and imagination ~ Students work in groups and talk with each other ~ Must learn how to formulate higher level questions ~ Not just the teacher lecturing but getting students to be active participants ~ Multiple ways to get to the same answer ~ Students can take initiative and talk amongst each other, not just to the teacher ~ Bloom's taxonomy (using different types of questions) ~ Use a survey to see how students are doing with the content as well as how they are doing emotionally/ mentally
3C: Engaging Students in Learning ~ Fun activities to engage the students ~ differentiate your content, pedagogy, and assessments ~ Group work so students can help each other... but group them with purpose! ~ Pair students equally... don't put students together if they will just fool around ~Use fun resources in class such as base ten blocks ~ Take advantage of technology but walk around to make sure kids are not getting distracted ~ Have good structure and pacing in the classroom ~ Have a good hook and a good closing ~ Clearly plan out everything in your lesson to prevent it from becoming a roller coaster ( forgetting things, going backwards, crazy, etc.)
3D: Using Assessment in Instruction ~ Anything that allows the teacher to assess what the students know ~ Ask lots of questions to make sure your students are understanding ~ Get students to ask questions too ~ Use peer review ~ Give students rubrics so they know what is expected from them ~ Classroom is more like a welcoming conversation ~ Don't just give graded assessments or busy work for the sake of it ~ Give feedback ~ Student self-assessment
3E: Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness ~ Make minor adjustments during the lesson to help students if they are not understanding (or are way ahead) ~ Be flexible and build your curriculum around your specific students ~ Be persistent ~ Don't be discourage if your students don't understand right away ~Demonstrate numerous ways to solve a problem to accommodate needs of all students ~ Invest yourself in your students' lives and they will invest themselves in the lesson ~ Reflect on your teaching... Is there something going on in a students' lives that is affecting their work? Did you teach the lesson clearly so that everybody understood?
